Job description
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking to fill the position of
a Chief of the English Translation Section in the Language Services Group of
the Corporate Services and Facilities Department (CSF) in its Washington,
D.C.-based headquarters.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Language Services, the
Section Chief manages a section which provides translation-related services
into English, as well as from English into a range of languages other than the
UN languages.
Main duties and
responsibilities:

Plan, supervise, and coordinate the Section’s activities, including
translation, revision, proofreading, and editing, as necessary to produce
high-quality translations and publications.

Assign work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
·
Perform translation and revision as necessary.
·
Determine resource needs and actively participate in the recruitment of
regular and contractual staff. Identify and recruit freelance translators as
needed.
·
Act as authority on language in the Section, including terminology.
·
Ensure that appropriate quality control measures are established and
applied.
·
Liaise with IMF Departments and Offices to resolve translation-related
issues.
·
Evaluate the effectiveness of current language software systems. Assess
future hardware, software and training needs and formulate related strategies.
Qualifications:
Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of a
relevant advanced university degree, supplemented by a minimum of 11 years of professional
work experience in translation/revision of economic, financial, legal, and
statistical material, or equivalent.
Skills:
Target language: English. High level of written and spoken native-level
proficiency in English. Ability to translate into (an) additional language(s)
will be considered an asset.
Source languages: at least one UN language; ability to translate
from (an) additional language(s), including (a) non-UN language(s), would be
considered an asset.
Substantial proven experience in translating and revising documents
dealing with the IMF’s activities or similar subject. Ability to coach
translators and revisers and to evaluate their work. Several years of
successful experience in management and supervision of a language unit.
Excellent organizational and management abilities. Strong interpersonal
and communications skills; ability to work as part of a team. Ability to
communicate effectively with staff and officials at all levels in a
multicultural environment.
High level of competence in an automated environment using networked
workstations for translation, revision, and administrative and supervisory
functions. Deep understanding of language systems and ability to advise on
language systems functionality and developments.
Short-listed
candidates may be required to take a written examination. Finalists will be
required to participate in a panel interview.
